Kisumu Day and St Mary’s School Yala will wait longer to renew their rivalry after the 2023 Nyanza Region Secondary School that were poised to start on Thursday were pushed to Saturday at Nyamira Girls High School which will co-host the games alongside Maranda National School.
The Kisumu County football champions and Siaya County runners up headline Group A’s group of death alongside Homa Bay County champions Agoro Sare and Masara.
Nyanza Region Secondary School Sports Association (NRSSSA) Vice Chairman Ngala Mbuor told the Standard Sports that after critical deliberations with the Regional Ministry of Education office and security agencies, they resolved to postponed the games due to the ongoing nationwide Azimio demonstrations.
Mr Mbuor who is the Principal of St Patrick’s Segere said they have resolved to start the games on Saturday and they will now end next week on Tuesday.
“Safety of the students, teachers and everyone involved in the Nyanza Regional games is key and that is why we have pushed the games to weekend.
“The demonstrations do not offer a good thriving environment for sports in the region and we want the best out of our schools.
“We will kick off the games on Saturday afternoon from 2pm after the opening ceremony,” said Mbuor who is the chairman of the Siaya County Secondary School Sports Association.
For the past two months, protests in Nyanza have paralyzed the transport sector with violent scenes witnessed in Kisumu, Siaya, Kisii, Migori and Nyamira Counties.
From the Nyanza regional draws, Usenge will headline Group A that also consists of Ndonyo, Matutu and Onjiko High from Kisumu.
In basketball 3x3, Usenge who finished runners up in the Siaya County finals will play against Homa Bay giants Agoro Sare and Ekenyoro in Group B.
