Low handicap players ready to improve on their handicaps as new Kenya Polo Association season hits-off

With the release of the 2023 Kenya Polo Association Calendar of Events, it's time for low handicap players to improve on their handicaps.

Despite the heavy rains, which had hampered their training sessions, four low handicap players have seen some success in their training sessions and ready for the opening tournament at Northern Kenya Polo Club on May 26-28.

The quartet from two different clubs are serious on improving their handicaps in order to catch up with senior players who are equally competing to be selected into national teams that will compete in different international assignments this year.

They are Nairobi Polo Club members Bobby Kamani, Kelvin Jumba and Eve Kamau and Mike Mwirigi from Timau Sports Club.

In starting to do so, it was a way to improve on their fitness and those of their horses in readiness for the opening tournament

Kamani (Bobby) said last year was a fantastic year of success, which made him a better player but still there's so much to achieve, so much experience to gain and so much to learn from experienced players.

"This season, I'm ready to improve on my stick and ball coordination, field strategy and polishing of my technique. I intend to spend most of my time on the horseback," Kamani told Standard Sports after a training session at Nairobi Polo Club.

Mwirigi said "We have been working quite for a month both off and on the field to bring back the horses to full fitness despite the persistent rains. We also trained in gym and on the wooden horse to also achieve both full fitness and improve my swings respectively".

He said he looks to a good season and hoped to win more trophies besides the fun that goes with the sport.

Kamau (Eve), an aggressive female rider, said their training sessions had been hampered with the heavy rains that have been pounding several parts of the country.

"We have had to take our ponies to Ngong Forest for fitness training to avoid the soaked pitches from heavy rains. However, we are ready for the game and improve on our handicaps," she told Standard Sports.

Not to be left behind was Nairobi Polo Club treasurer Jumba (Kelvin) who was a joy to watch last season.
