Heavyweights St Mary's Yala and Kisumu Day dominate games

St Mary's School Yala yesterday got off their rugby 15s title defense on a winning note as they hammered Bondo Township 42-0 in a one-sided fixture in the Siaya County Term One games.
The hosts touched down four unconverted tries in the first half to lead 20-0 before adding 22 points in the final half.
Albert Otieno, Joshua Guda, Dennis Akwiri, Joseph Onyango, Glacious Nganga, Austin Abok and Fredrick Nyambuga all crossed over the white wash in a win captain Daniel Nyerere said they will build on ahead of today's matches.
Speaking after the match, Nyerere said they executed most of their game plans but they are aiming higher.
"We played well today. The boys have been digging deep in terms of sacrificing their free time to hit the gym and train and we are happy we got off to a good start," he said.
"The journey is, however, not yet over and we have to win with big margins in our next matches."
In the other match, Chianda beat Barding 23-0 as Ambira picked a 44-0 win over Ugenya.
Yala are in Group A against Barding, Chianda and Bondo Township as Maranda, Ambira, Sawagongo and Usenge play in Group B.
In hockey, Nyanza regional champions Nyamira Girls rallied in the second half to edge out newbies Ng'iya Girls 4-0 as they took charge of the five-team round robin group.
Amanda Wamalwa scored a brace in the final quarter to add to Jacinta Opondo's first quarter opener and Laureen Auma's third quarter goal.
In the men's category, defending Siaya County champions Yala were humbled 2-0 by Usenge from Bondo Sub-County. Samson Ochieng and Gye Naibei hit the back board for Usenge who took charge of Group A.
In Kisumu, Nyanza hockey champions Kisumu Day ruled took command of the proceedings at Chemelil Academy after humbling both Maseno and Nyabondo.
Moses Isigi scored a brace as Kisumu Day took out Maseno School 2-1 in their opening match before Alex Mara scored Maseno's consolation in the dying minutes.
In the second match, Brian Wilson, Reagn Meshack and Isigi all sounded the boards as Kisumu Day thrashed Nyabondo 3-1. Clement Kola scored for Nyabondo.
"It's a successful day one for us. Our target remains the same; to reach the nationals. We are just training at the county levels," Kisumu Day coach Booker Odhiambo said.
