Maseno, Sinyolo Girls off to perfect start at Maseno University Open

Maseno University teams and former East Africa Hockey champions Sinyolo Girls on Saturday kicked of the 2023 Maseno University Open on the front foot after dominating their respective categories.

Hosts Maseno University picked vital wins in hockey, football, volleyball and basketball as the chase for glory in the annual event begun on a high.

In basketball, Maseno University Challengers hammered Nyangori Boys 53-12 to top Group B where Maseno School edged out Pirates 25-23 as Sigalame Boys saw off Maseno University Dukes 33-24 in Group A which also has Sigalagala.

In hockey, the Maseno University women team thrashed Kisii Polytechnic 5-0 with Aurelia Opondo netting a hat trick as Alice Owiti added a brace.

Their men's side also followed suit after humbling Wozza 3-1. Francis Njoroge scored a brace as Felix Ochola sealed the win.

The girl's category also saw reigning Kisumu County hockey champions Sinyolo Girls thump Kisumu Girls 3-0.

At the same time, Kisumu Youngsters Hockey Club which plays in the KHU Super League narrowly defeated Kisumu County giants Maseno School 2-1. Bonface Aliwa and Kevin Shikanada were on target.

In volleyball, Maseno University reigned supreme over USIU ladies after defeating them 3-0, a similar scoreline posted by their men counterparts in their game against Aluipe University.

Other results saw Siaya County giants Sawagongo High School edge Nyangori Boys 3-0, Siaya Police spike Sigalagala Polytechnic 3-0 before Sigalagala women hammered Kisii Polytechnic 3-0.

In football, Maseno Alumni thrashed Nyangori Boys 3-0, Alupe University defeated Masaba 2-1, Uzima College beat Mwitoti 1-0 and USIU edge Great Lakes University 1-0.

Maseno Homeboyz held Maseno School to a 0-0 draw as Kaimosi defeated Sawagongo 1-0. Maseno Main meanwhile defeated Sigalame 1-0.

Maseno University Director of Sports Joan Adalo said the institution not only focus on the quality academic excellence of their students but also supports co-curriculum activities like sports.

"We are happy with the turn out this year as more secondary schools came to test themselves as they prepare for their Term One games. The universities are also preparing for their KUSA games. Maseno University is known to support sports and it is our intentions that we nurture them through such tournaments," said Adalo.

The games continue on Sunday where the finals of volleyball, netball, football, hockey and basketball will be played.
