Kenya topped medal standings during the African Amateur Chess championships that ended on Saturday at the Mombasa Continental Resort.

Kenya won three out of the six gold medals available, which saw them provide the highest number of Africa's representatives to next year's World Amateur Individual championship in Greece.

From a total of 18 possible podium finishes, Kenya occupied seven - six women and one man in the open section. Top seed and Olympian Jully Mutisya produced numerous brilliant skills to win the women Under 1700 category with a rare nine points out of the possible nine points. [Ernest Ndunda]
