Mandera schools head to Wajir for regional games ahead of finals

Students from various secondary schools in Mandera County are set to participate in the annual regional games being held in Wajir County.

According to Mwalimu Ibrahim Hillow, the North Eastern chairman for Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association, the one hundred learners are from Mandera Secondary, Elwak Boys, Elwak Girls, Banisa Mixed Secondary and Moi Girls.

The five schools emerged winners in the County in their respect competitions. "The teams will compete in football, volleyball, basketball, netball and racket," said Hillow.

Hillow has urged the county government to support all students who exhibit talents in order to motivate them to put in more effort.

County director for Education Abdi Sheikh challenged the young sports men and women to top in their competitions on their way to national finals in Kakamega County.

"There has been a tendency of our county schools being defeated at regional level. Please let us work harder and win so that we participate in the national games," noted Sheikh.

He lauded the students for maintaining high standard of discipline during this year's county games and urged them to maintain the same spirit.

"Let us maintain the same level of discipline during the regional and national games so that at least if we lose in the games, we would win on discipline" advised Sheikh.

The annual games that were fully sponsored by the state department of Education saw all winners at individual and school levels awarded with trophies and medals through the office of the county director of Education.

On top of the Sh30, 000 for Moi Girls, the school received four trophies and 26 medals after they emerged winners in four out of the total five games they played.

Mandera Secondary received Sh10,000 in addition to 23 medals and two trophies while Elwak Secondary took home 12 medals. Banisa mixed which won volleyball games received one trophy and 12 medals.
