Heavyweights Kisumu Day High School will be eying to qualify for the national finals as focus shifts to the Nyanza Region Secondary School games set for March 19 in Kisumu.

Kisumu Day on Saturday reminded doubters that they are the kings of hockey boys in Kisumu County after dethroning Maseno School and punching their ticket to the regionals.

Interestingly, Kisumu Day knocked out Maseno in the preliminary group stages before proceeding to win the title by defeating newbies Ngere High School 2-0 in the final.

Both Ngere and Kisumu Day qualified to the regionals courtesy of Kisumu County hosting the regional defending champion, Maseno School. Despite Maseno’s absence, two hockey boy’s teams from Kisumu County still proceeds to the regionals.

“Our biggest hurdle was Maseno who have been a thick skin the past two years. Last year, they frustrated us and won both titles even though we were the best side.

“Learning from our mistakes last year which included holding the ball and dribbling a lot helped me develop the team into an attacking side who are clinical and dangerous in the offensive zones. This year we are going all the way,” said Booker Odhiambo, Kisumu Day coach.

At the same time, Kisumu Girls were crowned the new hockey girl’s champions after ending Sinyolo Girls decade long dominance in the county.
