A thrilling duel in perfect conditions saw Mutiso almost catch Kipruto with a late burst in the final metres of what was the closest finish in New York Marathon history.
Kipruto crossed the line in a time of two hours eight minutes and nine seconds, with Mutiso 0.16secs behind.
Kenya's Albert Korir, the 2021 New York winner, was third in 2:08:57.
