Kenya gaming operators push for player safeguards, back Gambling Control Bill

The Association of Gaming Operators Kenya (AGOK) has called for greater responsibility in the rapidly evolving gaming industry amid increased public interest and national debate.

The association outlined a series of actions it is taking to ensure player safety, particularly for young people and vulnerable groups.

"AGOK is committed to a gaming environment that prioritises player protection, fairness and social responsibility," said the board in a statement issued on Thursday, April 24.

AGOK, which represents gaming operators in Kenya, is taking proactive steps to address issues such as mental health and addiction prevention.

The association has implemented advanced age-verification systems to block underage access, introduced self-exclusion tools for players, and set up toll-free helplines offering mental health and addiction support.

"These measures reflect our commitment to responsible gaming," said the statement.

The association is also working closely with government agencies, regulators, and civil society to implement public awareness campaigns.

AGOK is supporting the Gambling Control Bill, which proposes consumer safeguards like self-exclusion registers.

Additionally, AGOK members are engaging in discussions with the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) to ensure compliance across the gaming sector, particularly for non-AGOK operators.

The regulated gaming sector contributes significantly to job creation, government revenue through taxes, and community empowerment. AGOK aims to balance industry growth with a commitment to player welfare.

"We are committed to ensuring a balanced ecosystem where innovation thrives, but player well-being is never compromised," added the statement.
