These colourful kitchen helpers are alternatives for the cloth oven mitts and pot holder. They are designed with ridges for a more secure grip and can withstand high temperatures of up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

They are best used for grabbing or holding the edges of hot cooking pots, sufurias and oven trays and have a firmer grip than cloth mitts and kitchen cloths. When cooking ugali, my finger mitts are my mitts of choice as they have a better grip on the sufuria than the metal jua kali ‘kamatas’.

However, you have to be careful when using them to get things from the oven as they will not protect your wrists the way the classic cloth oven mitts do. They are available in bright colours which makes them easy to spot. They are easy to store as they slide into each other taking up little space in drawers and counters. I always place mine on the kitchen counter, ready for use.

You can find them on Amazon. They are also available in the Kenyan online market with vendors who sell household goods.
