Last year was a moment former national secondary school girls’ basketball champions Kaya Tiwi will want to forget, and fast.

For years, they had been calling shots on the basketball courts, but 2019 was a different year.

Buruburu held their nerve to beat the favourites Kaya Tiwi 43-41 and reclaim the title they last won in 2000.

But as Kaya Tiwi begin their campaign of recapturing the trophy this year when they travel to Shimba Hills for the Kwale County Matuga sub-county Term One games, they have one agenda; to unleash terror on their opponents and reclaim their title.

Matuga sub-county Secondary Schools Sports Association chairman Robert Aran said Shimba Hills secondary school will host the games from Thursday to Saturday.

Kaya Tiwi are fresh from wining the Loreto Open girls’ basketball title in Limuru where they dismissed the host 38-24 in the final after beating rivals St Brigids Kiminini, Nairobi’s Buruburu and Olympic school.

After the sub-county games, winners travel to Kaya Tiwi for the Kwale County games ahead of the Coast Region championships.

Meanwhile, Dr Krapf from Kilifi County won boys’ rugby 7s title in the Shanzu Open sports festival at Shanzu Teachers Training College, in Mombasa.

The new champions dismissed Kwale High 15-5 in the final after seeing off Vallerye 31-0 in the semi-final. Kwale High defeated Kilifi’s Lutsangani 24-0 in the other semi. In rugby 15s, Shimo La Tewa won all their matches to be declared champions.
