Top guns St Anthony’s defeat Ololulung’a

National and East Africa hockey champions St Anthony’s Boys Kitale yesterday gave compatriots Ololulung’a a free hockey lesson and remain on course to retaining their Rift Valley Region title.

St Anthony’s from Trans Nzoia thrashed their Kajiado County compatriots 6-0 in a quarter-final match at Tambach Teachers College.

Noel Cheboi bagged a brace while Walter Rhodney, Lorgan Mabuka, Samson Sasa and Oscar Kiptoo scored one goal to see their side hit six past Ololulung’a goalkeeper Stephen Mwaniki.

St Anthony’s will today take on Ortum who edged out Ndururumo 1-0 in the quarters.

St Anthony’s coach Kelvin Lugalia, whose aim is to see his side defend all their titles, said their focus is on retaining the regional title. 

“We are looking at having a successful year and my aim is to defend all our trophies. However, we are taking one step at a time and right now, we are concentrating on qualifying for the national games and defending our regional title is the only way for us to reach the national games,” Lugalia said.

In athletics, Bravin Kogei of Kombatich Secondary School and Feliciana Kanda from Kapsait won the boys and girls 10,000m and 5,000m races respectively.

Kogei, the younger brother of world Under-20 10,000m champion Rhonex Kipruto, crossed the finish line in 29:50.6 ahead of Samuel Limo of Trans Nzoia, who clocked 30:04.0 to be crowned champion.

Noah Kimutai from Sinonin, Baringo County finished completed the podium in a time of 32:25.2.

Kanda won girl’s 5,000m in 16:23.0 ahead of Agnes Jebet (16:35.6) while Sarafina Kibet closed the podium in 17:03.2.

Meanwhile, there will be no room for error when Coast Region secondary schools Term One games begin at Shimo La Tewa High School and Shanzu Teachers Training College today.

The three-day championships that end on Saturday will see the region assemble its best to fight for slots to national games to be held at the same venues next month.

All focus will be on national girls’ basketball champions Kaya Tiwi of Kwale County as they seek to retain the title they have held for the past five years.
