World 3,000m record holder Daniel Komen and Athletics Kenya officials have commended Taita Taveta County for the launch of a high-altitude training centre in Wundanyi.

Komen, who is one of the best long distance runners in the world, said the construction of the centre will help tap athletics talent in the county.

“We expect more local and international athletes to take advantage of the chilly weather of Taita Taveta and camp at the centre as they prepare for international events,” said Komen.

Komen lauded Taita Taveta Governor Granton Samboja for his efforts of improving sports in the county.

“We expect to see more athletes from the Coast making use of the training centre,” said Komen.

Athletics Kenya President Jackson Tuwei said he was happy to see Coast region take athletics seriously.

During the launch, Samboja flanked by the Madoka half marathon founder Marsden Madoka, said he has committed Sh15 million for the construction of the training centre.

"We will ensure the centre is ready in 12  months," said Samboja.
