GSU lift Nakuru County Championships trophy

General Service Unit are winners of the inaugural Nakuru County Volleyball Championships.

The servicemen achieved the feat after whipping stubborn Kenya Prisons 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-16 and 25-20) at the end of the two-day tournament at Afraha Open Grounds, in Nakuru, last evening.

The winners were presented with trophies from Nakuru County Deputy Governor Erick Korir, who was the chief guest.

On their way to the final, GSU defeated AP Kenya 3-0 (25-17, 25-15 and 25-22) in the first semifinal clash while Kenya Prisons dismissed Kenya Defence Forces by a similar straight set of  25-14, 25-15 and 25-19 in the second semifinal match.

Prisons had earlier defeated Equity Bank 3-1 (25-17, 24-25, 28-18 and 25-21) in the see-saw battle to book a semifinal date with AP Kenya.

In the women’s category, Kenya Prisons defeated their arch rivals Kenya Pipeline with straight sets to be crowned champions in the four-team tournament that was played in a round-robin format.

The warders won their sets 25-17, 25-18 and 25-12 to bag the title. This was sweet revenge after Pipeline defeated them in the league championships.

Kenya Commercial Bank finished third after they defeating Directorate of Criminal Investigations 3-2 (19-25, 30-28, 22-25, 25-16 and 16-12).

With that loss against the bankers, DCI finished fourth.

In the schools and colleges category, Soin Primary School defeated Moi University with straight sets of  25-23, 25-12 and 25-19.

Earlier, Moi University defeated Kapkenyeloi 3-0 (25-17, 25-18 and 25-18) in the first semifinal.

They had dismissed Technical University of Mombasa 3-0 (25-11, 25-18 and 25-14) in the quarterfinals.

In the preliminary matches, Laikipia University lost 3-1 (16-25, 25-17, 25-13 and 25-14) to USIU-Africa.
