When this year’s East Africa secondary school games begin in Musanze, Rwanda next week, Kakamega High School rugby players will have one goal in mind; to win the regional title for their fallen fly-half Douglas Owala.
The former East Africa champions will be battling in honour of their teammate, who died last month.
Owala was key in Kakamega’s campaign at the national games as he played a crucial role in their third-place finish that earned them a ticket to the regional championships.
Kakamega coach Amos Wamanga said his charges had accepted the loss and vowed to win the East Africa title in his honour.
“We want to win the East Africa title because we are dedicating it to Owala. His death had a negative impact on the team, but they accepted the loss and are determined to honour his place in the team with the regional title,” Wamanga said.

Kakamega will also be out to redeem themselves having relinquished the East Africa title to Laiser Hill last year and the national trophy to Upper Hill in April.
Kakamega will rely on the services of first and second centres Valerian Tendwa and Timothy Omala as well as eighth man, Kevin Imani.
They will face off in a round-robin format with Upper Hill, who finished third in Gulu, Uganda last year, national finalists Menengai, Uganda’s Namilyango College, St Mary’s Kisubi and Kings College Budo.
Meanwile, former East Africa girls’ football champions Archbishop Njenga return to the regional scene with hopes of staging a brilliant performance just like they did in 2002, 2007, 2009 and 2011.
They are in Group B against 2016 champions and GS Remera, who will be out to recapture the title they won in 2016 during the games in Eldoret.
Remera broke the hearts of Kenyans when they beat St John’s Kaloleni 5-4 in post-match penalties in the final.
They will also face Alliance of Tanzania and Uganda’s Mukono High.
