Yaya Toure is coming out of international retirement after deciding he has unfinished business with the Ivory Coast.

The Manchester City midfielder called time on leading his country in September 2016 after winning his 100 cap – and was immediately inundated with calls to have a rethink.

Now, with the Elephants looking to build a team capable of winning the African Cup of Nations in the summer of 2019, he has agreed to perform a U-turn.

Ivory Coast's qualifying campaign began with a 3-2 home defeat at the hands of Guinea in June.

Their next game isn't until next September, when they face Rawanda – and Toure will be back.

A source close to the 34-year-old said: “Yaya helped Ivory Coast become African champions in 2015 – and he thinks he can do it again.

“From the moment he retired from international football there have been requests for him to return. And now he has agreed.”

Ivory Coast sacked coach Marc Wilmots in November after failing to qualify for the World Cup.

Yaya's brother Kolo remains part of the coaching staff and the hope is that the midfielder can help the team go for glory in Cameroon in 2019.

Toure has become a squad player under Pep Guardiola this season and will leave the club in the summer when his contract expires.

He made just eight appearances for City and is yet to start a Premier League game for the runaway leaders.

But Toure has played against West Brom, Wolves and Leicester as City have reached the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

And there will be no shortage of offers for the man who has helped the Blues win two titles, the FA Cup and two League Cups in the last eight seasons.

Toure's agent, Dimitri Seluk, confirmed on Twitter: “Yaya has decided to return to Ivory Coast national team. He wants to win another trophy with the Elephants of Ivory Coast.”
