Barcelona striker Lionel “Leo” Messi converted from the spot to double the lead for Catalans, at the crack of 60 minutes at Santiago Bernabeau on Saturday evening. Messi would then provide an assist to his teammate Aleix Vidal in the strangest fashion.

After having made runs in the Real Madrid box, Messi lost his shoe on his right foot and drifted the ball wide to enable Vidal to hammer past Keylor Navas. While ‘shoeless’ Messi would grab the international headlines as the man of the match, there are other achievements that the ‘little’ Argentine forward wrote as well.

As his rivalry with Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo still hovering in the world of soccer, Messi seized the El Classico match to come above his Portuguese nemesis once more.

He racked up his 54th goal in a single calendar year, as well as completing 200 assists-records that are not held by any other player in La Liga at the moment.

Messi also scored his 15th El Classico goal at Santiago Bernabeau, a record that he is the only holder. He seems to the most lethal player whenever the two rival teams lock horns. This is after scoring 17 goals against Real Madrid.

Barcelona to sits 14 points above Real Madrid as they aim at dislodging Los Blancos from holding the La Liga crown.
