Bayern chief hits at ‘overrated’ Neymar in a renewed row

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has admitted the club cannot afford to sign players like Neymar — but claims he is not concerned because he considers the Brazilian to be overrated.

Hoeness, who also criticised Neymar during the summer following his world record move to Paris Saint-Germain, was asked about the possibility of signing players for similar fees during a Christmas dinner with supporters.

The 65-year-old baulked at the suggestion of spending so much on one player, even if he considered them talented.

"We can not invest 222million in Neymar, who does not seem so good to me," Hoeness told fans.

"We can not invest with figures like that, not even 180million for [Kylian] Mbappe, who I think is very good."

When pressed further about Bayern's transfer policy, Hoeness said the club would continue to strive for a mix of home grown and paid-for talent.

"I think there will be transfers of 50, 60 or 70million," he continued. "Basically, the club strives for a mix of top stars and players from the youth [setup]."

Bayern Munich, who reappointed Jupp Heynckes as manager earlier this season following the departure of Carlo Ancelotti, are currently 11 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.
