Southampton confirm Claude Puel sacking despite Frenchman leading club to eighth-placed finish in Premier League

Southampton have officially given Claude Puel the boot despite the Frenchman enjoying a decent season- According to the Sun.

Puel guided the Saints to an eighth-placed finish and the EFL Cup final in his first season in charge.

Ex-Borussia Dortmund tactician Thomas Tuchel has been installed as the bookies favourite to take over.

A club statement said: “Southampton Football Club can today confirm that it has terminated the contract of Claude Puel with immediate effect.

“Everyone at Southampton would like to express our thanks to Claude for his hard work and commitment this year.

“The highlight of the season was a memorable day at Wembley in the EFL Cup Final, a day our fans will always treasure. We wish Claude well for the future.

“The search for a new management team is underway. We are confident that we will find the right fit in line with the long term vision of the club.”

Southampton have not sacked a manager since Nigel Adkins was binned in 2013, having taken the club from League One to the top flight in just three years.

Mauricio Pochettino took over from him before joining Tottenham, to be replaced by now Everton boss Ronald Koeman in 2016.
