Cheers Zoo for the vital point

Zoo finally got a goal and a point in the Kenyan Premier League after their 450 minutes of play.

Meanwhile, Mathare United got a real beating, while Gor Mahia were dislodged from the top spot as the league entered its sixth round.

All the joy was for the men from Kericho, though, as Mike Madoya became the first player to score a goal for Zoo when he cancelled out an earlier goal by Lawrence Juma who had given host Nzoia Sugar the lead.

“I think this is a fair result. It will spur the players to give their best in the subsequent games. We remain confident of getting a win soon,” said Zoo coach Sammy Okoth, a former Kenya international.

Zoo, however, remain at the bottom of the table with one point.

Nakumatt were the only newcomers to collect maximum points at the weekend as they registered their second win in the league to move to the top 10.

A 2-0 win over Western Stima ensured they move to ninth on the log thanks to goals from Kepha Aswani and Peter Nzuki.

Mathare United seem to be paying the price of losing almost their entire first team of last season. The slum boys, who only have less than five players from their squad last season were hammered 5-1 by Ulinzi Stars, the biggest defeat the 2008 champions have suffered since being promoted to the KPL in 1999.

The situation might have been made worse with the absence of their coach Francis Kimanzi, but that should be no excuse for such a result as Salim Ali, their assistant coach with credible credentials, was at the touchline.

Kimanzi was serving a one-match ban from the technical area after a ruling by the Independent Disciplinary Commitee. Ali was lost for words. “I can only say it was a bad day in office. We will sit down and analyse what went wrong,” said Ali.

Stephen Waruru scored a double to increase his tally to four this season

Samuel Onyango, Daniel Waweru and Enosh Ochieng were also on the scoresheet with Derrick Onyango getting a consolation goal for Mathare United. The soldiers remain the only unbeaten side in the competition thus far and have 12 points.

AFC Leopards continued their fine run with a 2-1 win over Thika United.

Gilbert Fiamenyo and Whyvonne Isuza handed Ingwe the two goals with Salim Mzee pulling one for Thika.

That win took Leopards to the second spot with 13 points, one behind leaders Posta Rangers, who beat Kariobangi Sharks 1-0 to dislodge Gor Mahia from the leadership.
