Hiddink revealed Costa suffered the injury after an accident involving a youth player and the Spaniard will wear a mask this weekend

Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink has revealed Diego Costa had his nose broken in training on Thursday.

But the Blues’ boss insisted the break came as a result of an accident involving Costa - who was embroiled in a bust-up with team-mate Oscar last month - and youth-team player Fikayo Tomori.

Hiddink, whose men host Newcastle tomorrow, said: “The only thing is that, yesterday in training, Diego got in a duel and had his nose broken.

“It was not Oscar! It was one of the youngsters of the academy who we like to participate. It was not a tough duel, but he put his nose on the back of the kid's head.

“He was very unlucky and his nose was broken. He will return today. They'll try and give him a mask as well... we are a team with a lot of masks.”

Tomori, 18, started every game as Chelsea's under-18s successfully defended the Youth Cup and the Canadian right-back featured in eight of the 10 UEFA Youth League matches on the way to victory in Switzerland.

He signed a first-year professional contract in July 2015, which commits him to the club until the end of the 2017/18 season.

Cesar Azpilicueta, Gary Cahill and Nemanja Matic have all worn masks after injuries this season. John Terry and Demba Ba are among the players that have worn one in previous seasons.

Hiddink added: “We are a Zorro team... Azpi, Matic, now Diego. He will come back and do some light training in the afternoon because he must experience how he deals with the mask. Then he will join us in the hotel later on.

“It was just a small incident, just a duel. But it's very fragile when you hit your nose on the back of the head of a firm young man. I think he will be available. We'll see how he reacts this afternoon in a very light session, but I hope – I'm not sure – that he will be available.”
