Roy Keane slams Wayne Rooney after PSV struggle: 'He is out of shape - mentally and physically'

Roy Keane has hit out at Wayne Rooney, claiming the Manchester United skipper looks 'mentally and physically out of shape'.

The England skipper cut a frustrated figure as United drew a blank in the Champions League against PSV at Old Trafford.

It continued a disappointing season for Rooney, who has scored just seven times in all competitions this term.

And former Old Trafford captain Keane believes his off-field activities are affecting his displays on the pitch - and insists he needs to do a lot more.

"Mentally he doesn't look sharp, physically he doesn't look in a great shape. He has to have a look at himself," Keane said.

"Wayne was on about lack of composure and quality, and he was as guilty as anybody. He needs to step up to the plate.

"Wayne's legacy at Manchester United is absolutely fantastic. His goals record is brilliant, but now he's the captain there's a bit more responsibility and he has to do a lot more."

Keane was also highly critical of Rooney’s recent involvement in a WWE event in Manchester.

Rooney, in attendance with his sons, United assistant manager Ryan Giggs and former teammate Darren Fletcher, was filmed as part of the storyline slapping superstar Wade Barrett.

"I always question certain players what are they doing off the field? I saw Wayne last week slapping a wrestler and I'm thinking 'why is he getting involved in all that nonsense?'

"There's no benefit to him so I think I would look at that side to it.

And the Republic of Ireland international believes that the United skipper, now 30, needs to think about how he’s looking after himself, off the field.

"It's not helping him. If you're not at it yourself you have to have a look and lead by example. He didn't do that tonight."
