Romelu Lukaku has told John Stones he needs to stay at Everton this year to enhance his European Championship hopes.

Stones faces one of the toughest examinations in football when he faces Manchester City’s all-star forward line on Sunday and Lukaku believes Stones needs this season to prove himself... and Everton is the best place to do that.

The Blues striker knows all about the frustrations of competing for a place in Chelsea’s expensively assembled squad, and he has warned his team-mate not to throw away a “good thing” at Goodison.

“To be fair John is in a good situation at a good club which believes in him. He is playing and is learning a lot from Phil Jagielka,” the Belgium international explained.

“He’s been here two years now but this is the year where he really needs to confirm he is the top player he can be. He is here in a good place. He needs to keep on doing what he’s doing. He has the Euros coming up, so why go?”
