Manchester United are hoping to sign Italy defender Matteo Darmian before they leave for their pre-season tour of the US on Monday.

United are one of three clubs trying to sign the Torino right-back, with senior Old Trafford sources having confirmed the club's pursuit of the 25-year-old.

Darmian started all three of Italy's group games at last summer’s World Cup in Brazil and has emerged as a full-back of substance in recent seasons, defensively sound with an attacking threat.

United are understood to be willing to pay £10million for Darmian, while Torino are said to be holding out for £14million for their sought-after player.

Torino president Urbano Cairo conceded the club have received three bids for Darmian - one from United - and said he wanted the player's future resolved before their return for pre-season training on Sunday.

“Everyone who comes to the pre-season training camp will remain with us for the rest of the season,” said Cairo.

“Sunday will be the deadline. Three offers have arrived for Darmian, but out of respect for the clubs who have made them, I won’t reveal who they are.

"Darmian is an extraordinary player who will want to try and win the Champions League one day.”

United chief Louis van Gaal has earmarked a new right-back this summer. They missed out on Dani Alves who signed a contract extension with Barcelona, before opting not to rival Liverpool for Nathaniel Clyne ahead of his move to Anfield.

Van Gaal often used Antonio Valencia, nominally a right-winger, at full-back last term, while he is open to offers for Rafael.

Darmian, who has also been used at left-back and as a centre-half during his career, has excelled for the Turin club in recent years and has 13 international caps - all won in the last 15 months.
