Sharks pounce on Moyas in FKF tie: Shabana rescue point against KK Homeboyz in thriller

Kariobangi Sharks overwhelmed Moyas 2-0 in a Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League match played at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, yesterday.

In an earlier match, Shabana came from three goals down to pick one point after holding Kakamega Homeboyz to a 3-3 draw.

Sharks scored the opening goal in the 32nd minute through Nicholas Ayiaga, who beat Evans Adache in the Moyas goal with a fine shot before Patila Omotto added the second in the 51st minute.

Shabana have to thank former AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia striker Demonde Selenga, who scored twice as the Gusii side fought back to pick a point from the Homeboyz.

Homeboyz had taken a 3-0 lead early in the match but crumbled in the second half to allow their opponents to claw back.

First, David Odhiambo scored in the fifth minute with the easiest of efforts and 10 minutes later, Keipos Mutuu added the second.

Mutuu was to score a third in the 27th minute from a move that caught the Shabana defence flat-footed.

Homeboyz seemed to have a perfect strategy to finish off the game early and thus dominated the first half hour of the match.

Shabana stayed back too much and paid the price as their opponents time and again broke through their backline.

But even from their subdued position, Shabana had moments when they were able to break free in search of an equaliser.

The first time they did was in the 25th minute when Andrew Ongwae was denied by Philip Odhiambo in goal for the first corner of the match. The Kisii-based side paid the price for sending too many men upfront as they conceded the second goal.

But the pressure paid off for them in the 43rd minute when Dennis Ongeri scored the opening goal from a goal mouth melee.

Homeboyz started the second half on a high and were rewarded with an early corner as Shabana defenders tried to clear the danger. But four minutes later, the tide turned against Homeboyz with Shabana piling their own pressure and with it got the first corner.

But Sam Kaguthi narrowly missed the chance to score the second goal for Shabana even as Homeboyz rested David Odhiambo for Hillary Wandera.

Still, it was Shabana who had the last laugh when Demonde Selenga scored the second goal from a screamer. Not done yet, he scored his second with a fine tap in the 85th minute.

In other matches, Bidco beat Oserian 1-0 at the Thika Municipal Stadium, St Joseph beat Nzoia United 2-1 while Modern Coast were awarded a walk-over against West Kenya, who did not show up in Mombasa.
