Super 8 tourney back with bigger purse

The ninth edition of the Extreme Sports Limited-sponsored tournament is set to kick off next month with the final slated for July.
A total amount of Sh1.43 million has been set aside as prize money for the tournament that will be competed in eight regions (17 constituencies in Nairobi).
Unlike the previous editions, where the winners received Sh250,000, this year’s champions will pocket Sh0.5m with first and second runners-up getting Sh250,000 and Sh100,000 respectively.
Five regional champions will get Sh60,000 each; first and second runners-up in regions will earn Sh15,000 and Sh10,000 respectively.
Confirming the prize money increase at a press conference in Nairobi yesterday, Extreme Sports CEO, Hussein Mohammed, urged clubs to register in large numbers and complete the registration process before February 20.

“Everybody is a winner in this tournament and will get something at the end. We’ve doubled the prize money for the champions to Sh0.5m,” said Mohammed.
“Preparations are in top gear and since we’ve reduced the registration fees from Sh5,000 to Sh3,000, I call upon the clubs to register in large numbers and make the tournament competitive,” he said.
Asked if the tournament has been sanctioned by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and what has happened since the last edition in 2011 which was clinched by Vapour FC, Mohammed said:
“This is not a national tournament but I’ve already informed the FKF Nairobi branch about it. Our doors are very open and we are not restricting anybody but we don’t want politics to distract it. We don’t intend to interfere with other leagues.
“Although we’ve faced challenges in the last few years, we’ve been supporting a number of Nairobi clubs.”
But FKF chairman Sam Nyamweya said the tournament has not been sanctioned by the federation.
“We are not aware of the tournament and we’ve not sanctioned it. They need to seek approval from the federation first,” said Nyamweya.
