Manchester United have the loudest supporters and Old Trafford is the Premier League's loudest ground according to new research.

United's home and away following saw them score a total of 167 decibels - taken from two matches (one home, one away) - a figure which marked their supporters as the loudest in the English top flight.

They were trailed by Stoke, Tottenham and West Brom, all of whom recorded a figure of 161 decibels.

In the tests, run over the last fortnight by Press Association Sport using the 'Sound Meter' smartphone app, it found that the league's quietest supporters were two sides who both wear claret and blue: West Ham and Aston Villa.

That pair measured just 152 apiece in total, with Liverpool also rating lowly, coming in the bottom three with just 153.

Five sides, including Everton and Southampton, registered 156 decibels.

Stadium-wise, Old Trafford also leads the way.

It's score of 84 decibels narrowly beats Stoke City's Britannia Stadium and Arsenal's Emirates Stadium as the loudest Premier League venue.

At the other end of the scale, Upton Park (West Ham) and Turf Moor (Burnley) are the quietest grounds, coming in at 74 decibels each.

Next on the quiet scale comes a trio of grounds all registering 76 - Liberty Stadium (Swansea), Loftus Road (QPR) and, somewhat surprisingly, Selhurst Park (Crystal Palace).

Liverpool's Anfield registers 77 decibels, less than Villa Park, home of Aston Villa, which stands on 78.
