Canadians to lay tartan track at Kipchoge stadium

Experts from Mondo in Canada are expected to arrive at Eldoret’s Kipchoge Stadium in two weeks’ time to lay a tartan track.

Mbiu Kimani, an engineer, yesterday led a team of  Stadia Sports Management Board (SSMB) officials in inspecting the stadium’s progress.

A regulating layer has been laid on the track awaiting a first and second layer to pave the way for the tartan. Long jump, high jump and other pitches, together with the changing rooms, are almost complete.

According to Mbiu, the experts will come specifically to confirm if the measurements are in tandem with the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) standards before the tartan is laid.

“Experts from Mondo in Canada will be here in two weeks to check if the IAAF standards have been complied with in laying the track. After that, the tartan will be laid. The works are in the final stages, “Mbiu said.

SSMB acting CEO Gabriel Komora said the national government’s task was to construct the track and pitches while the county government takes over the remaining works.

Athletes preparing for the August Commonwealth Games in Scotland and other international assignments will breathe a sigh of relief when the track is complete.
