Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology defeated Kenyatta University 2-0 to lift KUSA women's football title.

In the final at Moi University School of Law grounds, MMUST were too strong for KU's Desert Roses as this year's Kenya Universities Sports Association national finals ended yesterday.

Selphine Muyonga scored a brace as the Western-based university took home the second trophy in under one month. MMUST won the fifth edition of women's KUSA championship last month at Pwani University.

This was the second time both teams met this year. MMUST were clearly the better side, again. They won 3-0 in their first encounter.

On their way to the final, KU defeated Meru University 2-1, while MMUST got a bye after their opponents, University of Eldoret (UoE) failed to show up.

The absence of UoE gave Meru a lifeline as they went home with the bronze medal at the end of the two-day championship.

Speaking after the finals, Desert Roses coach Caroline Ajowi accepted defeat, saying she lost to a better side.

"I am happy that we lost to a better team. I came with a good side this time. We have improved from our last outing and I am happy with the results. We played to a goalless draw against UoE in the preliminaries, but this is a match we ought to have won," she said.

MMUST won the title without dropping a point, or conceding a goal in their matches against Meru, Mount Kenya University's Thika campus and now Desert Roses.

The match started on a high note as MMUST dominated proceedings from the first whistle.

Sharon Ayidi troubled Desert Roses' defence at will, but her markers were equal to the task. Goalkeeper Winfred Mutuku came to her team's aid with well-timed saves.

MMUST kept pushing forward, but Kenyatta University's defence was solid as it denied MMUST the early goal.

Selphine Muyonga's long-range strike from outside the goal area gave MMUST the opener in the 20th minute. With victory in sight, MMUST stepped up their attack and were happy to lead 1-0 at halftime.

On resumption, MMUST picked from where they left. Their efforts were rewarded with just 10 minutes left, when Muyonga completed her brace.

With the two goals, Muyonga was the tournament's top scorer with six goals.
