Moyes defends Louis van Gaal by insisting all is not lost

Louis van Gaal has been backed to make Manchester United's season a successful one by predecessor David Moyes.

The Dutchman has come in for huge criticism in recent weeks with supporters unhappy with his apparent pedestrian style of football.

United were dumped out of the Champions League in the group stages in midweek and slipped to fourth in the Premier League after defeat to Bournemouth.

But Moyes, who was axed with United in seventh in the table, believes there is still plenty to play for.

"They have a great chance of finishing in the Champions League spot," the Scot said on Sky Sports.

"They'll be disappointed to be out of the Champions League but they've got the Europa League to go for.

"They still have a great chance to qualify for the Champions League through the Premier League.

"They're still in the cup. They've got a good chance to get something out of the season."

Despite the defeat to Bournemouth, Van Gaal insisted United can still go on and lift the title.

“We have the selection to do that,” said Van Gaal, when he was asked if he was confident that United could win the Premier League.

“Now, I am going to challenge my players. We need to win three games in a week just to still be up there after Christmas. We can do that, but we have to keep fighting. Of course, I am concerned because this is not usual for United."
