Huawei, Equity launch ICT academy at Open University

Huawei Kenya, in partnership with Equity Group Foundation has launched Huawei ICT Academy at the Open University of Kenya (OUK) - a transformative step toward equipping thousands of Kenyans with the digital skills.
The academy is set to train over 10,000 learners in vital digital skills needed to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven economy.
Located within Konza Technopolis, Kenya's premier smart city and innovation hub, the new academy underscores the government's Digital Superhighway initiative, part of the broader Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
The launch comes at a time when Kenya is grappling with a growing demand for tech talent. While the country continues to be recognized as a regional leader in ICT, many young people-especially in underserved areas-still lack access to the technical training needed to compete globally.
Through the academy, students will access self-paced online courses in high-demand fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, and Software Development. Graduates will earn dual certifications combining academic credentials from OUK and professional qualifications from Huawei.
A Virtual Innovation Hub will also be established to allow students to co-create real-world solutions in sectors like agriculture, education, health, and fintech.
In addition to digital training, the partnership also promotes digital health innovation, with initiatives such as telemedicine services integrated into Equity Group Foundation's health programs.
During the official ceremony at Equity Centre, Huawei Kenya CEO Gavin Gao handed over the Academy plaque to OUK Vice Chancellor Prof. Elijah Omwenga. Also in attendance was Dr. James Mwangi, Chancellor of OUK and Executive Chairman of the Equity Group Foundation.
"This partnership exemplifies our shared commitment to nurturing Kenya's digital talent," said Mr. Gao. "By launching the Academy at OUK within Konza Technopolis, we are aligning with Kenya's national vision for innovation and digital inclusion."
Dr. Mwangi emphasized the importance of inclusive access to opportunity:
"Digital skills are essential for unlocking opportunity. Through this collaboration, we are ensuring that young people - particularly those who might be left behind - have a pathway to participate meaningfully in the digital economy."
Prof. Omwenga called the initiative a "major step" in the transformation of higher education in Kenya:
"Locating the Academy at OUK within Konza Technopolis reflects our role as a digital-first university. With Huawei's technical expertise and Equity Group Foundation's commitment to social transformation, we are creating a new model for accessible, future-ready education."
The Huawei ICT Academy is expected to serve as a catalyst for innovation, job creation, and inclusive growth as Kenya positions itself as a continental leader in digital transformation.
