SCHOOLS: St Mary's Yala to renew rivalry with Maseno School in Nyanza quarters

St Mary's School Yala will face off against nemesis Maseno School in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Nyanza Region Secondary School rugby sevens finals at Cardinal Otunga Mosocho on Friday.

Yala who finished top of Group A with six points play a Maseno side which bagged mixed results in their Group B encounters against Gendia and Otieno Oyoo High School.

Yala booked a place in the last eight after a perfect start to their title defense yesterday when they humbled Cardinal Otunga and St Paul's Gekano.

Albert Otieno and Joseph Onyango each scored a brace in Yala's 26-14 win over hosts Cardinal Otunga in their opening match.

Otieno again landed a brace, but this time, alongside Henry Oduor in their 34-5 win over Gekano. Onyango sealed the win in the five try win for the Siaya county giants.

"We are taking it a game at a time. We have seen the quality of rugby being played and we have made the necessary adjustments needed to get us to our only goal, to get to the nationals," said Yala coach George Kerima.

At the same time, St Mary's Yala table tennis trio of Trevor Emmanuel, Branson Jeremiah and Actros Otieno are all through to the finals of the Nyanza region racket games.

Trevor saw off his opponent from Kisumu 3-0 while Actross also edged out his Kisumu opponent 3-1. Jeremiah defeated his Nyamira counterpart 3-0.

On Friday, Trevor, Jeremiah and Actros will face William, Nevil and Calvince all from Kisii School in the table tennis finals.
