Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) RFC are the 2023 Lake Victoria champions.

MMUST dethroned Kabras Sugar on Saturday after stunning the Kenya Cup champions 14-13 in a tight final played at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo, Kisumu.

Washington Ombima kicked nine points to inspire the university students to their first ever win over Kabras Sugar in the rugby 15s match up.

The fly half was in sterling form during the opening minutes of the match when he gave MMUST the lead inside the opening five minutes after splitting the posts with a 40 yard penalty drive.

Three minutes later, Ombima was at it again after splitting the posts again from 30 yards.

Valerian Tendwa responded for the sugar men with a close range penalty to reduce the scores to 6-3 before Hillary Solano went over for the millers to lead 8-6 at the breather.

In the final half, Solano went over for his second unconverted try to lead 13-6 but the students will rise up again through Sam Maboni who touched down MMUST's first try to trail 13-11 after missed conversion.

Ombima who started the match will proceed to have the final say after kicking the last points of te match to give MMUST a deserved 14-13 win.

Speaking after the win, MMUST coach John Asila said he was proud of the boys for putting in the shift and winning the match.

"It's a result of pure dedication and hard work in training. The boys played their hearts out and now I believe we are ready to start our journey back to the Kenya Cup," said Asila who is preparing for the 2023-2024 KRU Championship season.
