Kabras Sugar win Kakamega Sevens title

Kabras Sugar were on Sunday crowned the 2022 Kakamega Sevens title after edging out rivals Menengai Oilers 19-7 as the curtains came down on this year’s National Sevens Circuit at The Bull Ring in Kakamega.
The sugar men who were boosted by the return of Kenya Simba’s quartet of Derrick Ashiundu, Brian Tanga, Bryceson Adaka and Fijian Jone Kubu won five of their six matches played over the two-day event.
Kabras finished second in Group D after winning their duels against Daystar Falcons and Kabraka University. A defeat to arch-rivals KCB saw the bankers finish on top.
In the quarterfinals, Kabras saw off Top Fry Nakuru 22-19 before knocking out Strathmore Leos 14-10 in the semis.
In the finals, Kabras Sugar took a 7-0 lead through Fijian-born Kenyan international Jone Kubu who crossed the white wash inside the opening two minutes before Barry Robinson added the extras.

Moments later, Malik Habil stretched the scores to 12-0 with an unconverted try before Oilers immediately responded through Okwemba.
Geoffrey Ominde converted the extras as Oilers trailed 12-7 at halftime.
In the final half, Simbas scrum half Brian Tanga who is fresh from World Cup qualifiers alongside Kubu joined the party after crossing over for the millers third try of the match to take the scores to 19-7 after conversion.
Kabras Sugar would hold on to become the sixth different winner in this year’s circuit.
Oilers won the Prinsloo Sevens in Nakuru last week while KCB won the first leg of the circuit- Kabeberi Sevens.
Mwamba won Driftwood Sevens in Mombasa, Strathmore Leos bagged Christie Sevens while Homeboyz were winners at Dala Sevens.
