KCB, Oilers sail into Kakamega 7s quarters

Defending champions KCB and leaders Menengai Oilers remain on course to winning the 2022 National Sevens Circuit after progressing through to the quarterfinals of the Kakamega Sevens yesterday at the Bull Ring.

Oilers are currently four points (94) ahead of the bankers in the race to clinch the overall title and they need to reach the finals today to secure the title.

The Prinsloo Sevens champions thrashed Vihiga Granites 39-7 in their opening Group A match before sealing a quarters berth with a hard fought 21-14 victory over Nondescripts.

In Group D, KCB saw off a resilient Daystar Falcons side 17-12 and Kabarak University 32-5 in the afternoon to qualify for the last eight.

The team received a massive boost following the return of winger Jacob Ojee, scrum-half Samuel Asati and forward Martin Owilla after their outing with the Kenya Simbas. 

KCB head coach Dennis Mwanja feels his side has what it takes to defend their National Sevens Circuit title.

“I am really happy with the wins today. The boys played well today and have shown a great desire to win this tournament. With the return of our players from the national team, we believe we’re better placed to win this edition. Considering this is the last leg of the circuit, we have to go all the way to the finals,” Mwanja said.  

KCB won the opening leg of the circuit and so far, have gathered 90 points.

Winger Jacob Ojee who joined the team on Wednesday after their stint with Simbas in the rugby World Cup qualifiers and who was the most valuable player in the Kabeberi Sevens tournament seconded his coach’s sentiments.

“I am elated with the boys’ performances in this circuit. They have fought so hard against well-organized sides. We need to minimise errors in the quarters,” said Ojee.
