Rugby: How Homeboyz fell giants to emerge Dala Sevens champion in Kisumu

Homeboyz became the fourth different champion in the ongoing 2022 National Sevens Circuit after winning the Dala Sevens in Kisumu on last Sunday.

Amon Wamalwa, Leonard Mugaisi and Collins Shikoli struck for Homeboyz as Amos Onyinkwa and Beldad Ogeta touched down for Oilers who are now two-time unlucky after previously losing to Mwamba during the Driftwood Sevens two weeks ago.

The Deejays finished unbeaten in Kisumu after winning six of their six matches played at the new Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo located within the outskirts of the Lakeside City.

Homeboyz finished top of Group D which consisted of Kenya Harlequin, Zetech University and Catholic Monks.

They kicked off their day on Saturday with a 17-17 draw against a resilient Catholic Monks side before going on rampage by destroying Zetech Oaks 45-13 in their second match.

The Oscar Ayodi coached side sealed their quarterfinal berth with a hard earned 24-5 victory over Quins.

In the quarterfinals, Homeboyz withstood a stern test from Christie Sevens champions Strathmore Leos by winning 10-7 in a close match.

Homeboyz withstood another test in the semifinals after knocking out immediate Driftwood Sevens champions Mwamba 14-10 to sail through to the finals where they defeated Oilers.

Meanwhile, KCB finished third after a 10-3 win over Driftwood Sevens champions Mwamba.

Strathmore Leos finished fifth after a 17-12 win over Nondescripts as Kabras Sugar won the Challenge trophy with a hard fought 14-10 win over Top Fry Nakuru.

Kenya Harlequin took the 13th place bagging rights after a 19-7 win over hosts Kisumu RFC.

KCB still top the National Sevens Circuit overall standings with 75 points followed by Oilers on 72 points.
