Rugby: Eyes on Strathmore University and KCB as focus shifts to Driftwood Sevens

All eyes will be on 2022 National Sevens Circuit leaders Strathmore University and KCB Rugby Club ahead of the third leg of the series, Driftwood Sevens set to be held at the Mombasa Sports Club on Saturday and Sunday.

The series resumed after a three-week break, paving way for the national rugby 15s team Kenya Simbas who hosted two Currie Cup fixtures at the time.

Strathmore Leos lead the National Sevens Circuit after the opening two rounds.

The 2009 champions are on 41 points, level with defending champions KCB but boasting a superior points difference.

The 2022-2023 season got underway with the opening Kabeberi Sevens followed by the Christie Sevens before the break occasioned by Kenya Simbas’ Currie Cup Division One matches played in Nairobi.

Leos who are fresh from winning the Christie Sevens are the first seeds in the tournament and will headline Group A.

The Louis Kisia-coached side will be hoping to build on their momentum as they battle with Impala Saracens, Homeboyz RFC and hosts Mombasa.

In Group B, reigning national champions and Driftwood 7s title holders KCB are in will lock horns against Kabras Sugar, Daystar Falcons and JumiaPay Pirates while Menengai Oilers, Kenya Harlequin, Topfry Nakuru and Blak Blad make up Group C.

Western Bulls are in Group D which also includes Mwamba, Nondescripts and Zetech Oaks who were promoted to the top division after winning the division two tournament at the Christie.
