Mwamba Rugby Clun on Saturday kicked off the New Year on a high note after registering their first win of the 2021-2022 season when they defeated Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad 28-10 in an early kick-off Kenya Cup match staged at KCB Sports Club.

Charles Kuka scored 15 points to inspire Kulabu to victory and manage to end their three match winless streak in the new season. The win lift Mwamba out of the relegation zone temporarily.

Mwamba headed into the game behind their three consecutive defeats against Oilers (25-19), Strathmore University (38-18) and Kabras Sugar (46-17)

Kulabu have a game in hand after their match against defending champions KCB was postponed on December 18 last year.

The visitors kicked off the match on the front foot after Lionel Ekesa gave Blak Blad the first points of the game by drilling in a penalty in the seventh minute of the game to lead Mwamba 3-0.

Mwamba’s top try scorer Kuka crossed over for the hosts in 25th minute after numerous attempts. He proceeded to convert his own penalty to give the hosts a 7-3 lead leading into the halftime break.

In the final half, Ekesa restored Blak Blad’s earlier three-point advantage after scoring a converted try to lead Mwamba 10-7.

Kuka responded again but this time through a penalty which he converted to tie the scores at 10-10.

Mwamba would the regain the lead minutes later, after Tony Owuor rose from the back of the scrum to score a try that was converted by Kuka for a 17-10 lead.

Kuka added two successive penalties to stretch Mwamba’s lead to 23-10 before a late unconverted rolling mole try sealed the hosts first win of the campaign.
