Rugby: Kakamega hit Malava to lift county crown

Kakamega High School defeated Malava boys 30-5 in a one-sided Kakamega County rugby final at Mukumu Boys High School yesterday.
On their way to the final, Kakamega defeated national 15s champions St’ Peters Mumias 3-0. In the second semi-final, Malava Boys defeated Handow High School 25-0, who also lost 61-0 to St. Peter’s Mumias in the battle for third-place.
St Peter’s head coach Shimenga Livondo bemoaned poor officiating in their loss to Kakamega, saying referee’s poor decision cost them the match.
“We were denied four penalties and the referee was oblivious of dirty tactics from our opponents. For now, we are concentrating on Sevens rugby,” said Livondo.
But his Handow School counterpart Michael Mukholo believes they have gained enough experience to help them compete against the more experienced teams in next year’s edition. The team qualified to play in the semifinals the first time in their history.

In boys’ basketball final, reigning champions St Peter’s Mumias hit Kakamega High School 60-21 to retain the trophy.
In Mombasa, brothers Saahir and Maahir Harunani stole the limelight as the county secondary schools swimming gala ended yesterday at Aga Khan Academy.
Saahir of Memon High School started medal haul by winning boys’ 16-19 years 50m butterfly in 28:03, while Hemed Abdulkadir of Allidina Visram and Mohammed Suleiman of Istiqama clocked 30:50 and 33:15 respectively.
Saahir then added another gold medal in boys’ 16-19 years 50m backstroke in a time of 32:44.
Maahir Harunani of Wima Complex Academy posted 29:87 to win the boys’ 50m butterfly. Mohammed Bilal of Jaffery Academy and Kassim Mohammed of Makupa finished second and third in a time of 30:59 and 39:84 respectively.
In girls’ 50m butterfly, Nabiha Shikelly of Jaffery Academy won in 37:57, while Sheila Muramba of Mama Ngina Girls High School finished second in 50:50.
