Menengai Oilers win 2022 National Sevens Circuit champions

Menengai Oilers are the 2022 National Sevens Circuit champions.

The Nakuru-based outfit were crowned champions with a game to spare after knocking out defending champions KCB 17-12 in the semifinals played yesterday at the Bull Ring in Kakamega.

Oilers went into Kakamega Sevens on 94 points, four ahead of second place KCB and they only need to get to the finals to be sure of winning their first ever title in the club’s six-year existence.

Led by former Shujaa player Gibson Weru, Oilers made history in style by coming from 12-0 behind at the break to win 17-12.

Martin Owila scored a first half brace to give KCB a statement 12-0 lead after one missed conversion before Oilers hit back through Timothy Okwemba and Chrispin Shitundo’s double touch down.

The win saw them sail through to their fourth consecutive final where they lost to rivals Kabras Sugar 19-7 in what was a repeat of the 2021 Kenya Cup final played three month ago.

Oilers previously featuring in the Driftwood, Dala, Prinsloo and now Kakamega Sevens.
