High-flying Mwamba maintain rise in Kenya Cup standings

Resurgent Mwamba climbed to fourth on the Kenya Cup standings after stunning Impala Saracens 20-16 in a round seven match at the Railways Club over the weekend.
It was the fourth win on the trot for Kevin Wambua’s charges, who had a shaky start in the season, losing their opening three fixtures.
Mwamba’s win came through tries by Stephen Sikuta and Brian Otieno. Collins Injera and Louis Kisia also inked their names on the scoresheet while Kevin Ronnoh and Erick Kerre touched down for Impala, who also managed two penalties by Quinto Ongo.
Meanwhile, Kabras Sugar’s unbeaten run stretched to seven matches as they thrashed Nondescripts 41-5 at the Jamhuri Showground.
Interestingly, all of Kabras’ points came in the first half, something that left head coach Henly Du Plessis unimpressed.

“It seems we just stopped playing in the second half. We didn’t use possession like we had intended and we were giving the ball away; giving them opportunities to attack,” Du Plessis said.
“It is everything to do with lack of concentration in the second half. You feel comfortable because you know the game is already won but that should not be our mentality,” he added.
For Nondies coach Willis Ojal, their slow start and failure to utilise chances was blamed for their loss.
“The boys were waiting to see what Kabras would do and we soaked in a lot of points within a short period and things changed in the second half,” Ojal said.
“Had we decided to play from the onset, maybe the result would have been different,” said Ojal.
In Nakuru, the first draw of the season was delivered as Menengai Oilers and Strathmore Leos played out to a 19-19 stalemate.
Strathmore will have themselves to blame for the failure to bag a win as full back Matoka Matoka squandered a last minute penalty.
There was, however, some reprieve for Strathmore as the draw, coupled with Mean Machine’s 47-3 loss to Kenya Harlequins saw them move out of the bottom of the standings for the first time this season.
The second match staged in Nakuru saw Homeboyz edge out hosts Nakuru RFC 19-18 as defending champions KCB defeated a resilient Blak Blad 20-15 at the Kenyatta University grounds.
