Nakuru loses to Mean Machine in Floodlit tie

Mean Machine captain George Mutuku praised his troops for an emphatic 24-15 victory over the Kenya Cup Champs Nakuru RFC in the Impala Floodlit tournament.

The University of Nairobi side were in fine form as they dismissed a young Nakuru side at the Impala grounds on Saturday evening. Speaking to Feverpitch after the victory, Mutuku said their show was a result of team work.

“We played as a unit and that will be our aim as we meet Nondies next weekend for the semi finals,” he said.

The defending champions Nondies also progressed to the semifinals after dismissing Mwamba 31-5 in a one sided quarterfinal tie earlier in the day. Mutuku, who doubles as both player and coach, will this week take up only one  role of coaching after he was ruled out of the tournament with a head concussion.

“I was quite unfortunate to get injured this early in the tournament. I will continue to serve the team the best way I can,” he said.

Eyeing consistence

Mean Machine have always had a good showing in the Impala Floodlit tournament and the side is optimistic that this year will be no exception, with the side aiming for nothing short of the main title.

Meanwhile Kenya Commercial Bank sailed through to the semi final of the tournament after a tight 22-17 victory over Strathmore in the last quarterfinal of the day. Strathmore will feel unlucy by the loss, after fans bemoaned the long duration of the second half.

KCB coach Curtis Olago claimed his side is not playing at the level he wants them to be, but they will be working extra hard to ensure they are ready for the Kenya Cup. This is their main priority after winning the just concluded National Sevens circuit.

KCB will now meet the hosts Impala, who registered the biggest victory of the day, by beating Homeboyz 41-19 in the first quarterfinal. The semifinals will both be played at the Impala grounds.
