An Assistant County Commissioner (ACC) and a police officer, have been arrested in Cherangany, Trans Nzoia County, for allegedly offering a resident a fake Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) admission letter.

The duo was among six suspects arrested over the incident, during which they are said to have demanded Sh500,000 from the family of Sharon Chebet Naibei, who had allegedly been admitted to KDF, before handing over the letter.

The two government officers, based in Nandi and Uasin Gishu counties, visited the home of Samuel Naibei at Kachibora market in Trans Nzoia East with the intent to issue the said letter to his daughter Sharon.

The suspects are said to have asked the family for the money after which they would hand over the letter which showed Sharon had been admitted to Lanet Barracks.

Trans Nzoia East OCPD Josiah Dullo said the suspects were arrested by officers from the Kachibora Police Station as they waited for the money at Naibei's home.

"The two officers, an Assistant County Commissioner, a Police Constable, and four other suspects were arrested as they awaited the money to be handed to them. The letter was fake and investigations have been launched after which the suspects are arraigned," Dullo said.

Dullo said the suspects arrived at Naibei's home purporting to be KDF officers.

The police officer, he said, is attached to Langas Police Station in Eldoret, and is currently on leave.

He disclosed that during the arrest, two KDF admission letters, serial numbers 23001717 and 23001895, bearing the names of Edwin Kosegei Kiplimo and Sharon Chebet respectively were recovered.

Also seized were a motor vehicle and two white envelopes branded the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Forestry, both addressed to Kiptoo Better, a cash-bail receipt number 1754182 issued to Elvis Kiptoo Bett by Ruiru Police Station for the offence of stealing dated August 3 2023.

The suspects are being held at Kachibora Police Station as investigations are launched.

Dullo warned members of the public against falling prey to fraudsters purporting to be KDF officers.

"We are warning members of the public to be on high alert and be aware of fraudsters posing as KDF officials out to con them," said Dullo.
