Nyamweya hopes to streamline league company operations

Kenya Football Federation (KFF) chairman Sam Nyamweya says one of his major policies if elected in the October 29 national elections will be to streamline the operations of the league company.

While Nyamweya is full of praise for the Kenyan Premier League (KPL), he insists there is need to make the company more accountable so that its decisions are respected.

"Being of the founder members of the KPL, I am proud to say that they have done a great job in the many years they have been operational. It is under them that the league got major sponsorship.

"Despite their success, there are a few things that need to be corrected so that we can ensure that the positive gains are not lost.

"My administration will seek to strengthen the KPL more and insist that officiating and disciplinary issues are de-linked from the company," he explained.

One decision

He termed as sad the recent decision made by the KPL disciplinary committee regarding unplayed matches between Ulinzi Stars, Chemelil Sugar and Sofapaka.

"We must have one decision regarding disciplinary issues in the league. It does not make sense that one part of the KPL says one thing and another part differs with this same decision.

"This sends the wrong signal to clubs and sponsors and calls for some radical changes in how certain decisions are arrived at," he said.

Nyamweya also dismissed fears that he would disband KPL if elected, saying such allegations are unfounded.

Registers closed

"My administration will only seek to build on what KPL has achieved in the past and as long as everybody wants to do what is right, there is no need to fear that the company will be disbanded," he said.

Unlike in previous elections, each of the 16 KPL clubs have three votes each and will take part in this year’s polls.

Elsewhere, the voters register officially closed on Saturday after one week of scrutiny by delegates.

There were, however, few protests reported in several parts of the country and the Independent Electoral Board (IEB) is supposed to print the final list of voters on October 24 five days before the elections are held.

The voters register was opened up after protests by several candidates who claimed there were fake clubs in the list.

As the IEB prepares to publish the final list, top candidates have resumed their campaigns with the elections just two weeks away.

Football Kenya chairman Mohammed Hatimy traversed Meru and Embu at the weekend in search for votes while Hussein Mohammed and his group began touring Mt Kenya region on Monday where they will be for three days.
