Manchester City were accused of destroying the Premier League trophy in a clip doing the rounds on social media.

The video appeared to show an item resembling the iconic piece of silverware smashed to pieces on the ground as striker Sergio Aguero looked sheepish in the background.

The clip looked to have been filmed at City's training ground.

It surfaced as the club paraded their trophies on a parade around Manchester on Monday evening and soon became a social media sensation.

But the clip is not genuine and was taken from a prank sketch filmed by City TV for a comedy video.

There has been a mishap with the Premier League trophy before as far as Manchester City are concerned, with full-back Oleksandr Zinchenko accidentally knocking over the trophy last year.

Yet despite rumours circulating online, it avoided any damage this time around - with the real Premier League trophy was seen on the parade, along with the FA Cup and League Cup trophies, as City celebrated their historic campaign.

Thousands flocked to salute their treble-winning heroes, who wore specially-designed t-shirts listing their achievements to mark the occasion.

The parade was also a farewell for outgoing club captain Vincent Kompany, who is set to return to Anderlecht as player-manager after a fairytale end to his stunning City career which has seen him lift many trophies without any mishaps.

“I think Vincent, we are going to miss him a lot," Pep Guardiola said.

"I think it’s an incredible way to say we are going to see him in the future. He’s coming back sooner or later.

"It’s an incredible way to say goodbye. He’s a real captain.”

Kompany also issued an emotional farewell message to fans as he admitted he knew he had to go out on top.

“First I want to say thank you to everyone," began Kompany. "11 years at this club what a journey we’ve been on.

“Let’s be honest we were always a great club whether we had silverware or not.

"Now we’ve got silverware and I’m really proud that with this group of players we’ve given you something that was coming for a long time.

“I’ve been part of something really special thanks to a special group of people.”
