Kevin de Bruyne is losing his race to return to action when Manchester City face old club Chelsea.

The brilliant Belgian midfielder suffered a knee ligament injury at the start of this month that was expected to keep him out of action for six weeks.

De Bruyne circled champions and Premier League leaders City's trip to Stamford Bridge, where he spent an ineffective two seasons before making his name in Germany's Bundesliga, on December 8.

However, club insiders now say the 27-year-old is nowhere near playing in the home game against Watford four days earlier so isn't expected to be involved against the west London Blues.

The news is a big blow to manager Pep Guardiola, who is desperate to have one of his most influential stars back in the fold ahead of the packed Festive period.

The Chelsea game looks like being City’s toughest remaining test on the road this season and Guardiola knows a win at th Bridge would see his side take a huge step towards retaining their crown. But he has no intention of rushing De Bruyne back too soon, considering he has now suffered two serious injuries since the World Cup.

De Bruyne missed the first two months of the season with ligament damage to his right knee that required an operation.

He then hurt his left one under challenge from Fulham’s on-loan Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah in just the second game of making his comeback.

Meanwhile, Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets has played down the possibility of a reunion with Guardiola at City.

He explained: "I said that I would think about it (leaving Barcelona for Pep) and it's normal that I have him in mind because of his importance on my career. I have never seen myself anywhere else. The Guardiola thing I said not because I saw myself anywhere else, but because I should have him in mind, as is normal."
