Manchester United new-boy Bruno Fernandes has opened up on the role of Cristiano Ronaldo in his move to Old Trafford.

Fernandes secured a big-money move to the Red Devils last week, completing the same move from Sporting Lisbon that a young Ronaldo made back in 2003.

In his first interview as a United player, Fernandes outlined how he was inspired by watching Ronaldo during his time in the Premier League as a youngster.

He has now gone into more depth about the role of the superstar by revealing his Portuguese international team-mate advised him to join the club when he asked for advice.

“Yes, I talked about Manchester United with Cristiano,” Fernandes told United's official website.

“He just said good things about United. He said he started living his dream here and he started being a really good player here. I think he is happy with my transfer."

He also revealed that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sought out the opinion of Ronaldo, speaking to him about Fernandes before deciding to pull the trigger on the move. “I also talked with Ole and he said he asked Cristiano about me,” said Fernandes. “And he said good things about me, which is good!

“Cristiano plays with me in the national team and he knows me, and for me he’s a good person. I want to follow his steps.”

Ronaldo was not the only Manchester United legend to play a part in the move, with ex-Sporting Lisbon star Nani also being in touch with his former team-mate.

“I played with him, he was my captain at Sporting and I learnt some things from him,” said Fernandes.

“He sent me a message the other day and said he was very happy for me with my move.”

Fernandes played 90 minutes on his Premier League debut against Wolves and will now aim to kick-on as he gets acclimatised to his new team-mates during the winter break.

They will return to action away at Chelsea on Monday, February 17.
