Azimio la Umoja Nairobi gubernatorial candidate Polycarp Igathe has conceded after losing the seat.

He lost the seat to UDA's Johnson Sakaja who has been declared the winner after garnering 699,392 votes against Igathe's 573,516.

Many online users have praised the decision taken by Igathe and UDA's Nairobi Women Representative hopeful Millicent Omanga for conceding minutes after the announcement by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

ODM's Esther Passaris trounced Omanga in the tight race after garnering 698,929 votes against Omanga's 586,246 votes.

"I accept the decision of the people of Nairobi and thank all our supporters. The Governor of Nairobi is His Excellency Johnson Sakaja. Congratulations! God bless Kenya," Igathe said in a tweet.

Moments later, Omanga also took to Twitter and congratulated Passaris urging Nairobians to support her as she steers the Women Rep office.

"I want to thank the people of Nairobi who voted for me and those who didn't. I accept the results even though they're not in my favour. Passaris has won, she deserves our support and prayers," she said.

After being handed over his election certificate, Sakaja vowed to revert all functions of Nairobi back to the county government from the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) once we are sworn in.

"I want to thank the outgoing NMS led by Director General Mohammed Badi for their work in the City. I acknowledge it is not easy but I want to affirm that from the day we are sworn in, all the functions of the county government under the 14th schedule shall revert to the county government of Nairobi immediately." Sakaja said.
