Ndindi plans major political move in three weeks

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has been forced to bite the bullet, and will soon announce which political outfit he will embrace.

Known for sitting on the fence and getting bashed by political opponents and Kenyans at large, Nyoro has also apologised for his absence in the National Assembly during the final vote of the Finance Bill, 2026.

"I have been thinking about the way forward. In the next three to four weeks, I'll give the way forward on which team I'll decide to move forward with. I pray for patience,” said Nyoro yesterday.

The MP, who was once a religious follower of President William Ruto, and part of his legion that rallied Kenyans behind him in the 2022 general elections, says his decision will take into account what is good for the country.

“The reason I am taking time is that this decision is not for my political convenience but about what Kenya is going to become,” he said during a press briefing in his office on Saturday.

Nyoro, who was keen not to divulge on which side of the opposition he is leaning to, said this decision will be the most consequential of his political career.

As such, he has to make it with a sober mind, without the influence of the ongoing pre-2027 political heat, so as not to repeat the mistakes of 2022.

“I say this with a lot of humility. I was part of the team that campaigned in 2022. Out of that learning, probably it has made me to be more cautious and reflective,” he said. “I have taken time to look at the political scenario and I am still taking that time.”

He said the single most important thing that troubles him in this decision is how to move the country forward.

“And who are these individuals who can come together and do this job,” he said.

Nyoro said that although he is known in the political space to be fence-sitting, the fact remains that he is not with the government.

He said the things he speaks of, citing his criticism of the government on public debt, cost of living and privatisation and divestiture of state assets, cannot be uttered by someone who is in bed with the current administration.

“It is clear and obvious that I left the government. I keep on answering this question not only because Kenyans ask me but also politicians who keep provoking me,” he said.

He dates his fallout with the government during the heated impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

He said the plan to get rid of Gachagua, now a formidable force in the opposition through his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), did not sit well with his conscience.

“I looked at the issue as a human being, and a Christian before a politician. I decided not to participate. I told those promoting it that my conscience is clear, and told them that whatever cost I have to pay, I will not blame anyone,” he recalled.

Yet, Nyoro did not disclose if he will be joining Gachagua’s team or if he will be forming his own political outfit.

He admitted that most opposition leaders are his friends, but insisted that the decision he needs to make cannot be based on friendship as he will have to defend that move for years to come.

“It is too weighty a decision not that I am afraid. I plead with Kenyans to give me three to four weeks,” he said, adding that he knows this could be underwhelming, but he is convinced that time is necessary so as not to repeat the 2022 mistakes. “I have been on this path before.”
