Nyamira MCAs pass report to elevate Keroka border town

Nyamira is poised for the establishment of a second municipality following the County Assembly's adoption of a report by an Ad hoc Committee advocating for the elevation of Keroka town.

During a special sitting held mid-last week, the assembly endorsed the report, clearing the path for the formation of Keroka Municipality. This new municipality will encompass five wards: Nyasiongo, Rigoma, Gesima, Gachuba, and Magombo.

According to the report, these five wards boast a combined population of 1,007,922 people, with a monthly revenue base of Sh14 million.

The proposed municipality is slated to have its headquarters at Rigoma market.

Within its boundaries, the new municipality will host 22 government-operated health facilities ranging from levels two to four, alongside six faith-based and private health facilities.

The area is characterised by over 20 market centres, contributing significantly to economic activities and fostering social interactions among residents within the municipality.

Keroka town is well-connected with improved feeder roads linking to the main National Trunk Road, specifically the Narok-Sotik-Kisii road.

Keroka town, which initially served as a social and cultural center during the colonial period, has evolved into a rapidly growing urban center.

Governor Amos Nyaribo said urban areas in the county have been experiencing significant expansion in both population and amenities. He emphasised the necessity to upgrade these areas to the deserving status as outlined by the law.

Rigoma MCA Nyambega Gisesa expressed gratitude to the members of the Nyamira County Assembly for their deliberation and approval of the Keroka Municipality Charter.

"I extend my appreciation to Governor Nyaribo and Speaker Enock Okero for their guidance throughout the process. With the municipality, we anticipate increased funding from various development partners aimed at enhancing our infrastructure, including roads upgraded to bitumen standards, improved drainage, efficient garbage collection, installation of street lights, and better overall town management."

Gisesa said starting next week, the county government will issue a tender for the improvement of some key backstreets in Keroka town to meet bitumen standards.

Nyamira town, serving as the county headquarters, attained municipality status three years ago.
